Book Talk – Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) Singapore

Project Designing Cultures: The Lasting Visual Memory has been invited to give a talk on the Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) Singapore as part of the Singapore50 (SG50) celebrations.

The creative outputs of this project are two sets of illustrated children’s storybook, Vanishing Crafts and Vanishing Materials, that comes with a parents’ companion archive of contemporary artisanal masters and crafts, entitled Vanishing Wisdom + Memory.

Vanishing Materials captures the story about a boy called Ku Nin who, on a particular rewarding Sunday, learns fine traditional crafts skills and knowledge from two artisanal masters of traditional crafts Mr Amos and Mr Kei. In it, Ku Nin encounters a traditional material character called Woodclay, who shares with Ku Nin a valuable meaning of what is the intrinsic meaning of the word adaptable.

Vanishing Crafts tells the story of Ku Nin, who had experienced a most special and unforgettable life’s lesson in a Mid-Autumn Festival. Ku Nin goes through an onerous journey of making a lantern, but with help and encouragement from the three master artisans of traditional crafts Mr. Yeo, Mr. Henry Ng and Mr. Goh, he persisted, to finally and proudly achieve his goal!

Vanishing Wisdom + Memory archives rich interesting stories from first hand accounts of eight remaining traditional artisans and craftsmen in Singapore. It allows parents to connect with their real life stories engaging the very values of these voices to share with their children.

These books will be sold in Kinokuniya and Popular Bookstore from April 2016.
